Design Philosophy & About Me

It’s been said that to find your true passion in life, one should look to what you enjoyed as a child.  My passion for design and space planning began at a very young age. Growing up the long standing joke at our house was, “one night you’ll wake up to go to the bathroom and when you come back to your room, you’ll have forgotten where you put your bed!” That’s because I was always rearranging my bedroom. After a 13-year hiatus I’ve come full circle back to Interior Design to make this deep-rooted passion of mine a career. When you're doing what you love it won’t feel like a job at all.

When designing a space my objective is to create an environment which reflects the needs and desires of the client, while creating balance and harmony in an aesthetically pleasing design.  I strongly believe in creating an environment that, when considering a residential design, it depicts the entire family, or in the case of a commercial project, the company as a whole.

Working together I will create balance and harmony through the use of texture, fabric, color, and furnishings while also incorporating the use of natural elements that relate to the earth. Incorporating unique and creative lighting solutions, utilizing metals, woods, and stone, while keeping in mind the atmosphere or feeling the client desires.

I graduated MATC’s Interior Design Program in 2007. Upon graduation I recognized the shift in the industry where opportunities stopped short due to the recession in 2008. In 2009 I began working at the Department of Veterans Affairs and remain there today working in the Fiduciary Hub which services and protects our most vulnerable veterans. I’ve been in the Fiduciary Hub for the last 10 years, and with the Department of Veterans Affairs for 12 years.  I’m a veteran myself and am very proud of that. At the end of the day, it feels wonderful giving back to others! This is a feeling that is very important to me regardless of where I’m working and I know that the Interior Design field will definitely also provide this satisfaction.

I believe the following quote by Barack Obama also applies to those working in any service oriented position.

“That’s when America soars, when we look out for one another and we take care of each other, when we root for one another’s success, when we strive to do better and to be better than the generation that came before us and try to build something better for generations to come, that’s why we do what we do.

That’s the whole point of public service.”

Some of the common threads between employment with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Interior Design is that both require one to be detailed oriented, have internal and external customers, and both are service oriented positions.

I really enjoy Interior Design and would like to work in this field as it’s near and dear to my heart, so in the spring of 2020 I went back to school at MATC and have been taking some refresher courses.  Being enrolled in these Interior Design courses has reaffirmed my passion for this field!

I must say that I’m so impressed with the instructors at MATC as they are so helpful and have patience levels beyond belief!  I’m also thrilled to see that SketchUp is being used in so many of their courses.  Often times clients seeking Design Services find it difficult to envision what a finished space will actually look like, a SketchUp rendering is such a wonderful tool to provide them.  This is one area where I’m so excited to become more proficient in.
